Ci sono giornate estive in cui non c’è riparo dal caldo e rimanere volontariamente sotto al sole può essere un gesto per auto infliggersi una colpa. Il sudore sotto il collo e tra le pieghe della ciccia colava lungo il grande petto per poi sbattere contro l’orlo della maglia che lo assorbiva e lo faceva camminare lentamente tra le trame del tessuto. La peluria dei baffetti sotto il naso rivelava piccole goccioline di acqua, le ascelle erano caverne marine con stalattiti e stalagmiti di peli; quando alzava le braccia per sistemarsi i capelli si trasformavano in due mostruose bocche barbute.Le gambe erano bruciate dall’esposizione prolungata e anche lì il sudore, dove non trovava l’ostacolo dei peli, scendeva e si addentrava tra le pieghe della pelle e i lembi del vestito lercio. Il corpo secerneva tanto di quel liquido che sembrava come se il sole stesse spremendo una spugna di 97kg per 1,50mt come sfida, per vedere quanto sudore potesse uscire dai pori della pelle.

Luana senza batter ciglio era seduta con la testa china a leggere un libro, le cicale frinivano così forte che se qualcuna fosse morta o esplosa nessuno se ne sarebbe meravigliato, eppure lei sentiva quel baccano solo quando passava da una pagina all’altra e tirava la testa fuori dalla storia tra profondi respiri, per poi ributtarsi in apnea e non sentire più niente. Quasi niente, perché quando il cervello rivela rumori non previsti l’orecchio prende il sopravvento sugli occhi e quel rumore stridulo della gomma dei freni che cercano di opporsi al roteare di una ruota la destarono. I suoi occhi videro quelli di un esile bambino fermo su una bicicletta dall’altra parte della strada.

Lei era sudata, sporca, puzzava e i suoi capelli erano unti. Lui anche aveva strisce di sporco sotto il mento, sui gomiti e terriccio lungo le gambe, i capelli erano sudati, sporchi e arruffati.
Mentre le parole tardavano ad uscire, gli sguardi reciproci erano fermi, lei era inespressiva: perché sprecare un sorriso se potrebbe ricevere improvvisamente un insulto o un sasso in fronte?
Il filo tra i loro occhi fu tagliato per un attimo dall’auto che passò e che fece muovere i capelli di entrambi verso la direzione di marcia. Poi tornò il silenzio.
Il bambino, mentre infastidiva le crosticine sul suo ginocchio, scartabellava le immagini nella sua testa per poterne scegliere una e associarla a quella figura calata in quel contesto, in modo da capire chi fosse e come reagire. Una donna grassa seduta ce l’aveva, sua nonna, che stava tutto il giorno spiaggiata sulla sua poltroncina, ma a casa e non lungo la strada. Il libro, i libri li conosceva, certo, a scuola, in casa, suo nonno gli leggeva tante favole, fino a quando una mattina la testa gli disse di uscire di casa in pigiama, fare 5 km a piedi e di non guardare mentre attraversava la statale. Nemmeno il vestito che copriva il minimo sindacale per poter definire una donna “vestita” lo stupì, sua sorella aveva cominciato ad andare in discoteca con le amiche e il sabato sera lui la prendeva in giro ridendo mentre suo padre tra bestemmie e colpi le faceva notare che era troppo piccolo.
Il problema era però assemblare tutto questo: abitudini, oggetti e comportamenti diversi e calarli nello scenario di una strada secondaria piena di buche in una zona di campagna. Chi era quindi quella donna? Perché era lì? Perché leggeva per strada su delle sterpaglie secche e sotto il sole? Era nemica o amica? Doveva sorriderle o averne paura? Nel dubbio la scrutava, con la testa verso il basso per non farsi vedere e gli occhi verso l’alto per osservarla.
Passato qualche minuto le unghie delle dita si congedarono dalle crosticine, il ginocchio si rimise in moto spingendo in avanti il pedale e la bicicletta ripartì, lentamente. Quando il bambino fu lontano Luana finalmente si decise, e sorrise, poi cercò il punto della storia dove era arrivata e le cicale smisero di nuovo di frinire.
Arrivò la sera, i clienti in totale furono una manciata, ma lei si sentì anche fortunata perché l’ultimo capitò all’ora in cui staccava dal lavoro e tornava a casa. Potremmo anche definirlo gentile, quest’uomo, non solo perché non la picchiò, né la insultò, ma perché, dopo la prestazione sessuale, la accompagnò poco vicino casa di lei, certo non prima di averle chiesto uno sconto di 10 euro per il passaggio, sconto che Luana, pur di non stare a discutere, gli accordò.
Il giorno dopo era di nuovo lì, lungo la strada, sotto il sole, con il libro del giorno prima, stesso vestito, stessi mostri sotto le ascelle e un corpo completamente bagnato dal sudore.
Stavolta non fu il rumore dei freni a farle destare la testa, il cervello la avvisò prima, il bambino stava ripassando ma a bassa velocità, i freni li iniziò a premere molto prima tanto che arrivato all’altezza di Luana dovette domare il manubrio strattonandolo prima a destra poi a sinistra per non cadere, tanto andava piano. Poi si fermò.
La stessa macchina del giorno prima sfrecciò, e gli stessi capelli ondeggiarono.
Luana non sorrise, ma chiese cosa volesse.
Il bambino rispose con un’altra domanda: “Chi sei?”
Chi sono… pensò Luana.
“Vattene, che è pericoloso fermarsi lungo la strada”, gridò la donna.
“Perché sei lì? Sei senza casa?”, ribatté il bambino.
“Fatti gli affari tuoi”
“Perché leggi?”, il bambino aveva così tante domande che prima di aspettare la risposta sentiva il bisogno di fargliele tutte insieme: “cosa stai leggendo?”, “ma non hai caldo?”, “aspetti qualcuno?”.
Chi sono? Aspetto qualcuno? Ripeté Luana a bassa voce.
“Leggo in strada, perché mi piace stare all’aperto e non ho caldo”, le rispose infine, simulando un fare seccato.
Le crosticine sopravvissute dal giorno prima si trovarono di nuovo sotto assedio, il bambino non era soddisfatto, era tutto lì? La risposta alla fine era così semplice?
Attraversò la strada a piedi portando a mano la bicicletta e una volta arrivato di fronte a Luana sbirciò il titolo del libro.
“Quanti anni hai?” gli chiese Luana.
“Nove”
“E dove vai con la bicicletta?”
“Sono stato a giocare con i miei amichetti e ora torno a casa”
La faccia sporca, il mocciolo secco sotto il naso e quell’aria da impaurito curioso le facevano tenerezza.
“Tu come ti chiami?”, gli chiese il moccioso.
“Mi chiamo Luana, ma tu puoi chiamarmi Lara”
“…ma ti chiami Luana o Lara?”, il bambino non capiva.
“Il mio nome è Lara, ma tutti mi chiamano Luana”
“Perché ti chiamano Luana”?
“Perché fa rima con…”, Luana la puttana sospese la frase per un attimo per poi continuare “pelle sana”.
“Luana pelle sana, perché a me non dà fastidio stare sotto il sole e allora dicono che è grazie alla mia pelle che è sana”. Il piccoletto commentò “sei come Nautilus, sei invincibile!”, la donna fece un sorriso con annesso un sospiro e rispose che sì, forse lo era e poi chiese il suo nome.
“Mi chiamo Mario e tutti mi chiamano Mario. Anzi no, nonna mi chiama Mariuccio perché per lei sono deboluccio, zia Agnese Marietto, perché dice che peso un etto e nonno Ettore mi chiamava Mariolino perché ero il suo piccolino”.

Gli occhi di Mario riandarono sul libro di Luana “pelle sana”, le disse che suo nonno era un gran lettore, aveva una libreria grandissima ed era solito leggergli delle storie fantastiche, peccato che l’ultima non la finì mai, perché una mattina una macchina era entrata dentro casa e lo aveva investito mentre lui era ancora a letto a dormire, per questo lo trovarono morto in pigiama. Il nonno gli mancava tanto, così come le storie e inoltre non aveva più saputo come era andata a finire l’ultima che gli stava leggendo. Luana, lo accarezzò sulla testa e gli disse che, se avesse voluto, avrebbe potuto portargli il libro e che avrebbe continuato lei a leggerglielo. E così fece Mariolino: il giorno dopo, invece di andare a giocare con gli amici, aspettò che Luana arrivasse nello stesso luogo dove si erano incontrati.
Luana la puttana spostò la sedia dalla strada per nasconderla dietro una grande fratta, prese Mariolino e lo fece sedere su una delle sue grandi cosce, la pancia e il seno erano così abbondanti e morbidi che al marmocchio sembrava di stare su una poltrona tanto stava comodo. Lei aprì la prima pagina del libro e lesse “A Mariolino il mio dolce piccolino. Nonno Ettore”, poi prese il segna libro è cominciò:

“Fuggito? Era il nostro timore, non la speranza. Ma circa un’ora dopo si sentì un fischio assordante, come prodotto da una colonna d’acqua lanciata con estrema violenza. Il comandante Farragut, Ned Land e io eravamo sul cassero e frugavamo con lo sguardo ansioso la profondità delle tenebre.”

Luana leggeva con enfasi, agitava le braccia e cambiava voce per rendere le scene drammatiche. Mariolino rideva più di lei che della storia e la stringeva a sé quando l’Abram Lincoln dovette combattere contro il mostro marino.
La storia venne sospesa perché era sera e il piccolo doveva tornare a casa, ma non prima di darsi l’appuntamento al giorno dopo.
Così si rividero anche il giorno seguente, quando la nave Abramo Lincoln affondò, il professore Aronnax incontrò il misterioso Capitano Nemo e Mariolino si affezionò inconsapevolmente a Luana la puttana. Il pomeriggio dopo conobbe la perla gigante che il Capitano Nemo custodiva. I giorni passavano, le leghe sotto i mari aumentavano e Mariolino tornava a casa sempre pulito e con occhi sognanti.

A Ventimila leghe sotto i mari seguirono altri libri con storie altrettanto affascinanti, Mariolino andava da lei quando poteva e, quando saltava l’appuntamento Luana riprendeva a leggere i suoi di libri, ma prima di riprendere da dove aveva sospeso la volta precedente, si fermava sempre alla prima pagina per leggerne, con affetto e malinconia, la dedica che era sempre la stessa: “A Luana, per me una donna, per gli altri una puttana. Il tuo amico Ettore”.
